Why do orthodontists recommend baby teeth be extracted for some patients?

Removing selected baby teeth early can be necessary to help guide the eruption of permanent teeth.  Timing baby teeth extractions carefully may prevent a variety of problems including: high eruption of the upper canine teeth, root resorption (which is the shortening of the teeth roots), especially on permanent lateral incisors, and severe crowding of the permanent dentition (which could lead to extensive braces therapy).

Not all children need to have baby teeth out, but it's always a good idea to have your child get an orthodontic screening around the age of 7.  This screening can be a great asset to determining your child's future orthodontic needs.
